Walk to Guatemala

As we begin to think about our walk to Guatemala, might we consider this walk as part of our physical and spiritual training for the journey that our congregation will embark on starting in January 2019.

There will be a weekly reflection or question in STAWlight to help us prepare:  what to carry or leave behind, taking the first step, sloshing through the rain, marveling at the scenery….


  1. Keep track of the number of kilometers you walk, run, swim or bike, or count each 20 minutes of housework, yoga or exercise as 1 kilometer and email your weekly kilometers or activity to the with subject line: Walk to Guatemala, or you can drop a note in the labelled box in the Narthax.
  2. You are invited to share stories, personal goals or achievements, gleanings and pictures via email to me and we will share at our Potluck Lunch.
  3. Every 2 weeks we will announce our distance and location.
  4. Potluck Lunch after church- date to be announced.



For those times when you choose an activity other than walking, check the chart below to determine the activity’s equivalent number in steps (or the most similar activity).

Simply multiply the number of minutes you did the activity by the number of steps indicated on the chart.  For example, 30 minutes of housework/vacuuming equals 3000 steps (30 minutes x 100).

You can estimate steps by knowing that approximately 1250 steps equals one kilometer.

  • 200 steps is about one city block
  • 9 holes of golf (walking) equal 8,000 steps
  • Most people will do about 1,200 steps in 10 minutes
