Happy Pride! It goes without saying that Pride is

Happy Pride! It goes without saying that Pride is a creative, exciting, and fun event in Vancouver. But it's also a reminder of how much distance still needs to be covered for the full inclusion of LGBTQplus people all over the world. LGBTQplus people are 70% more likely to experience violence in refugee situations, and here in Canada, they represent 25-40% of homeless youth.

In living a Christ-centred life, we are called to live out the radically inclusive love that God promises us and make it real. So while there isn't a parade this year, Vancouver Pride has tons of events and happenings that can help you celebrate Pride and advocate for LGBTQ rights! Just check out their website for the full program here.

As for us, we have a great Pride service this Sunday at 10am (https://youtu.be/uy6pHwLhMeo) with Rev. Brenda Fawkes, (@blfawkes ) who will share some of her story along with the parable of the woman at the well, asking how do stories that are kept on the margins offer us a new glimpse into God?

Rev. Fawkes has been a minister for 19 years, was on faculty at the Vancouver School of Theology, and now is a Minister in the Office of Vocation for the United Church (a fancy term for shaping and accrediting ministers!) We will also hear a testimony from one of our youth, hear from our LGBTQ community group The WORD is OUT, and enjoy music from Rev. Curt Allison. Then Jazz Vespers features Don Stewart (http://www.donstewart.ca/) and friends, with reflections by Rev Dan. So maybe a cool lemonade and cool jazz will help us beat the heat? 🙂

As many of you know, next week we have a unique and moving opportunity to take a step towards reconciliation. On Sat Aug 7th at 9:45am at the church to walk down Granville Island to see Squamish artist Xwalacktun (O.B.C.) who is carving a house post for the church. This post will be part of a Reconciliation Wall project at the church called "Honouring the Children". You can meet the artist, learn more about the wall, and show your support for the ongoing work of reconciliation in our community. Register with me! (r.walker@standrewswesley.com)

Acorn, bluebell, ivy, fern, moss, blackberry, dandelion, lark, raven, heron, starling, hazel, heather, goldfinch, otter and kingfisher...

Do you know those words? Of course you do.
But a child under the age of 20 will be less likely to be familiar with these words or the things themselves because the editors of the Jr. Oxford English Dictionary have been greatly reducing words that pertain to the natural world. Why? Because they need to make room for more current words that describe the world of computer technology, like broadband, database and chatroom.

I wonder, what worlds get lost when words are lost?

We’ll explore this question on Sunday and hope you can be part of it.

"GOD'S DOORS ARE OPEN FOR ALL"

That’s the open-door message that’s now planted in our memorial garden. When you swing by Today (Thursday, July 22nd, 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM) for a time to be in the sanctuary, make sure you take a look!

The Pride Doors are a friendly loan from Shaughnessy Heights United Church @shuc1550 who were kind enough to bring them to us carefully loaded on the back of a pick-up truck. The eye-catching, colourful message will be with us until later in August.

Have you, like me, ever watched a dancer who could spin around and around and then balance on their toes, not at all dizzy? Amazing! How?

I’ve heard that the dancer needs to keep eyes focused on one spot, but I’ve never mastered that trick called “spotting”. Jen Cunnings did it when she danced – you can ask her!

I spin and I get dizzy.

How about a Sufi practitioner like Anna who turns, and turns, and turns as a form a prayer and though she can do this turning prayer for a very long time, she doesn’t tip over, dizzy from all the whirling. How??

This Sunday (https://youtu.be/Ekqj9rVpxqg)Rev. Curt Allison reflects on finding peace in the midst of chaos. In my mind, that’s kinda like being able to spin and not get dizzy – it takes practice. Chaos tends to crowd out any semblance of peace we might carry within us. Like a baby elephant getting on an elevator, chaos leaves no room for anything else and peace, clarity, and perspective get squeezed out the door.

In the service we’ve dipped into the music files and so will have a rich array of musical offerings to help us sense that strange and surprising “peace that passes all understanding.”
