Bill Runge Quintet
In 2019 the quintet performed on the main stage of the Vancouver Jazz Festival to a very entusiastic crowd. The band has also performed at The Blue Martini, 2nd Floor Gastown, Guilt & Co., Pat’s Pub, Frankie’s, and St Andrews Jazz Vespers.
The music is groove-oriented, Latin and WorldBeat influenced with interesting melodies and exciting improvisations. Jazz with a ‘post-Beatles’ sensibility.
This quintet, patterned after the Jazz-Fusion group “Steps Ahead” features some of Canada’s finest jazz musicians performing original
music from Bill’s 4 solo recordings and a variety of favourite tunes from the likes of Steps Ahead, Weather Report and Pat Metheny.
In 1990 Bill’s first quintet, “The Creatures of Habit” won the Grand Prix at the CBC-Alcan Jazz Competition in Montreal. He has recorded with such artists as Michael Buble, INXS, Jim Byrnes, K-os, Long John Baldry, Divine Brown, Tower Of Power Horns, Hard Rubber Orchestra, Powder Blues & VEJI. Live shows include; The Funk Bros., Frank Sinatra Jr., Michael Feinstein, Josh Groban, the VSO, Colin James, Arturo Sandoval, Natalie Cole, & Heart. Bill’s last CD; “A Tribute to the South American Masters” was released in 2006.
“Runge, one of Vancouver’s most tasteful players, balances delicateness and muscularity and builds his solos gracefully, always with the composition in mind.”
