Yesterday we welcomed Xwalacktun as our third and Yesterday we welcomed Xwalacktun as our third and final speaker as part of our Artivism series. Xwalacktun just finished carving and installing the new House Post at St. Andrew's-Wesley so it was wonderful to welcome him both as an artist and a member of our community. Xwalacktun is an artist of Squamish and Kwakwak’wakw ancestry. He focuses on the Salish style and his work has a connection to the past, present and future. His work includes the Reconciliation Pole at the Vancouver School Board offices, the stunning 20ft pedestrian overpass spanning the Sea to Sky Highway in Squamish, the Snam Smanit sculpture in Ambleside Park, and other pieces all over the world including Scotland and Beijing. He has received the Order of British Columbia for his art and community work as well as the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and FANS Award from the North Vancouver Arts Council. It was an honour to hear him speak about his practice and we are grateful for the contibutions Xwalacktun, Clare Yow and Tom Carter have made to our community during the Artivism series. Yesterday evening we welcomed Clare Yow, our secon Yesterday evening we welcomed Clare Yow, our second Artivism speaker. Artivism is a three-part art, spirit and social justice series hosted on Zoom. Clare Yow is a Chinese Canadian settler and independent visual artist whose mediums include photography, video, community engagement and her focuses include food, race, diaspora, feminism, community justice. She is a parent and lives in Chinatown with her partner. Clare and her partner Leo founded the United Aunties Arts Association to support independent artists and artisans with racialized and equity seeking backgrounds through collaborative art-making initiatives. It was created during COVID-19 measures as a response to the need for community, but it is also about harnessing that community power and wisdom as a salve against racism, patriarchy and oppression. Part of that work is collaborative art projects. Another part of that work is a democratic online and in person platform to show and sell local artists work. The art ranges from craft pieces to photography, painting, handbound journals, jewelry and a range of other works. Thank you to local artist Tom Carter for sharing his work with us and digging deep into the meaning of his pieces. "It's not going to be fast, and it's not going to "It's not going to be fast, and it's not going to be easy, but it's going to be rich and uplifting for us all."   Marie Wilson, Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner Two important events: This Sunday, Orange Shirt Sunday, we’re honoured to welcome Sam George, survivor of the St. Paul’s Residential School to the morning service (10:00 AM).  Sam has shared his story with others in interviews, healing circles, speaking with children in schools.  But he has never shared his story in a church.  He doesn’t feel comfortable in a church because it was a group of Christians who ran the school where he was abused.  But he’s agreed to come and share his story with us.  On a day to “remember the children”, I can think of no better sermon for us all to hear.  A number of us had a chance to meet and speak with Sam at the house post carving on Granville Island in early August.  We’ll have a chance to welcome he and his wife, Michelle, to our home-base this Sunday.  I hope you can be present and come with an open mind, open heart and open ears.   This Thursday, September 30th, Canada marks the first National Day for Reconciliation.  St. Andrew’s Wesley is privileged to do this with the unveiling ceremony for the house post that will be raised and put in the Narthex.  Squamish master carver, Xwalacktun, O.B.C., will lead the ceremony; Eugene Harry will offer opening prayers.  As it is a holiday and as some of our Indigenous guests are travelling a distance to be present, the ceremony will begin at 2:00 and will last just over an hour. Please RSVP at: office@standrewswesley.com   I thank the Indigenous elders and artists who work with us and their gracious spirit.  Thank you, also, to Kaisa McCandless and Steve Zolnay of Reconciliation Matters who have made the connections and given countless hours to this project.  You are invited to wear your orange t-shirt as a sign of respect and support as we remember that “every child matters.”  For our shared future of healing and trust, we walk this path together.   “Remember, reconciliation is yours to achieve.
