The Past As Present

Date

May 14, 2025

Time

2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

As we near the 100th Anniversary of our denomination, we will explore the origins of The United Church of Canada and the way in which a young church emerged in a young nation.  We will engage with both the challenges and promises which are a part of the legacy of our denomination:

  • the emergence of women in leadership
  • the inclusion of the 2SLGBTQI+ community
  • the engagement with a theology which is dynamic and evolving and which resists doctrinal straight jackets
  • the commitment to right relations with indigenous nations and the acknowledgement of past wrongs with regard to the church’s participation in colonization and the residential schools system.
  • We will also discuss the way in which our past informs our visions for the future of our emerging church.

The Rev. Dr. Brian Thorpe is a former lecturer at VST, congregational minister of many years, and a national leader in the ongoing work of reconciliation.  Humble, wise and extremely knowledgeable, this is a series you don’t want to miss!
