Join acclaimed violinist, violist, and composer Meredith Bates for The Observer Effect. This immersive concert explores the ways perception shapes reality, drawing inspiration from the observer effect in quantum physics while reflecting on themes of identity, transformation, and human connection. Through richly textured compositions, improvisation, and expansive sonic landscapes, the music invites listeners into an experience that is both intimate and thought-provoking.

Watch the pipe organ come to life with organist and improviser Annie Bloch.
Cologne-based organist, composer and improviser Annie Bloch approaches the pipe organ as a living instrument — one shaped as much by the space around it as by the performer at the console. In this concert, Bloch works with the distinctive voice and acoustics of St. Andrew’s-Wesley to create music that moves between composition and improvisation, lingering in moments of change, tension and possibility. Drawing on experimental music, pop, and ambient influences, her work reveals the organ in unexpected ways: expansive, atmospheric, and entirely of the moment.

Johannes Skoog is one of Sweden’s leading organists and a major presence on the international concert stage. Winner of the 2024 Canadian International Organ Competition, where he also received the Bach Prize and the award for best overall program and repertoire selection, Skoog brings exceptional musicianship and a keen sense of colour and architecture to the organ.
Now Court Organist to His Majesty the King of Sweden and Concert Hall Organist at Konserthuset Stockholm, Skoog performs regularly across Europe and North America. His appearance at St. Andrew’s-Wesley offers a rare opportunity to hear one of today’s most distinguished organists in one of Vancouver’s most remarkable acoustic spaces.

Decoys

Decoys brings together a selection of art songs and duets for voice and piano inspired by birds. The programme ranges from the classical era to contemporary Canadian works by Glenn Sutherland, Alfredo Santa Ana and Emily Doolittle.
The music is presented alongside a slideshow of original bird photography from the singers’ own birdwatching journeys, accompanied by musical, historical and scientific-al anecdotes. Part recital, part photo exhibit, and part exploration of the natural world, Decoys considers the importance of nature, the intersection of art and ornithology, and the many ways birds have inspired music.
The programme takes us around the globe, with music inspired by birds from Canada, Europe and Taiwan.
The show is for bird lovers of all ages and levels of musical experience — and some might even consider it mildly educational!
