Join us this Sunday, January 28th at 4pm, where the spirit meets jazz. Featuring Material Culture Project.
The core of the band has been together since 2014. Over this past year and a half, we have been reading through arrangements of original compositions or jazz standards adapted for this current ensemble. The compositions for the January 28th Jazz Vespers are part of that effort. The theme of the music is centred on the individual, part of a larger community, connected, engaged, and challenged. The following selections can speak to that theme but first.
The Material Culture Project, Why the name? Material culture is the physical evidence of a society reflected in the objects they have created, valued, or perhaps even widely discarded. In a throwaway culture, modern jazz is no more disposable than the people who are drawn to this music. It reflects who we are as a community, how we see our world. The music expresses how we feel and, perhaps, what we want to achieve; ambitious, adventurous, at times unreasonable.
